It’s beginning to look a lot like…
Sunday as promised, Hubs ventured back into the abyss known as our attic, pulling down box after box, after box of Christmas decorations. We had put up the tree and strung the lights on Saturday.
As we dug through the more than 22 years of accumulated ornaments, snowflakes, angels and Santas, there was about half I decided to not put out. Some things were more suited for a house with very small children (a navtivity of stuff dolls) or some few not suited to a house with a feline hopped up on catnip (a glass nativity.)
Still, I cleared the mantel off so I could display my Santas. Collected over the years, I will usually find a new ‘jolly ol’ elf’ to add each year.

Several years ago, WK started collecting Nutcrackers. A new one of these is added each year too. This season the newest ‘cracker’ is the farthest one of the left.
Mostly gifts from my mom, the angels are given a special place on the bookshelf.
While I set up these displays, Hubs loaded up the tree with ornaments. Over the years we have accumulated 100s of decorations. We have handmade ornaments from nearly every phase of our children’s lives. We have first Christmas ornaments given by the Grans, we have construction paper poinsettas made in kindergarten, Plaster of Paris snowmen lovingly painted in Girl Scouts, Teddy Bear and Santa soccer players, and lace snowflakes made when I had that kind of patience.

Even though she is an artificial tree, just like Frosty was made real because the kids loved him, our tannenbaum is very real because of the love that hangs from her boughs. (bah! ~ cue the sappy holiday music)
A few have asked about our Advent Calendar. I made the one we use when my kids were maybe 6 and 2. I didn’t have a pattern ~ my bad. I mostly ‘eye-balled’ it. What was supposed to be a smallish decoration, turned into a ginormous wall hanging. Each pocket is probably 4×6-inches. I have filled this daily holiday reminder with just about everything. When the gift didn’t fit, which wasn’t often, I would draw treasure maps, hiding more clues throughout the house, for them to find Christmas mugs with hot chocolate mix, over-sized candy canes, or coloring books.
As long as the kids are living at home, I’ll continue to hang our Advent Calender, filled to brimming with daily presents.
We still have a few things to put out, but we’re nearly done with our Christmas decorating. I think this is the earliest we’ve set up our tree… ever! The last thing to do is dig out all our Christmas music, blaring carols and contempary renditions of White Christmas and Rudolph, and the scene will be set.

Ohh la la – looks so beautiful. WOW. Great job.
We wait till after the boys’ birthdays to put up decs so birthdays are not over powered by Christmas….cannot wait though!
Thanks for sharing.
Love the new season look!
[Tara R.] Laura… thanks! It looks more festive now. My Step-Sister’s birthday is very close to Christmas. The poor girl didn’t have a proper separate birthday celebration until she moved away from home. BTW…her name is Meri.
LOVE the new look, the Nutcrackers, the decorations, the tree…How Very, Very Festive! I’ve kicked off the Advent Season by re-gifting you. I didn’t really know the protocol, so I winged it, as they say…Ella Numera Una & I, being the only Festive Folks at my place (yes, the other 2 are veritable Grinches), put up our little ol’ fake tree on Friday. But we seem to be missing a box of ornaments…the hunt is on!
[Tara R.] Melissa B… fake trees rawk! I guess I’m considered the Grinch in our family. It’s just not right putting up Christmas decorations and it’s 70-degrees outside. Once the holiday tunes start their heavy radio rotation, I’ll be good. Re-gifted! That’s funny, thanks!
It looks great here Tara.. love the holiday layout!! We have never done an Advent calendar it always sounds like such fun. I decorated all weekend.. we get a real tree so we won’t have that for another week or so..I cannot wait!! I love decorating for Christmas!
[Tara R.] Kim… I’m glad you like it. I really wanted to do something fun for the holidays.
The new layout feels nice. I like it a lot. Decorating for Christmas is a bit delayed for us, this year – but we’ll get there.
[Tara R.] Lou… I’m glad you like it. I’m trying to get into that holiday spirit.
I just love what you do with the Advent calendars. All of your decorations seem fabulous.
[Tara R.] Patois… I always wanted to create special traditions for our little family. I think this is one that we have all really enjoyed. It helps get everyone into the spirit of the holidays. The kids loved waking on Dec. 1 and seeing the calendar up and filled with goodies.
Great makeover!
Nice decorating traditions too.
[Tara R.] Weasel Momma… thank you so much!
You are much better than I am! I lugged loads of rubbermaids down, and then said, “Screw it!” and decided to only do half as much this year. Since we travel every holiday, it just doesn’t seem worth it to go all out.
[Tara R.] AFF… no I’m not… did that Saturday. We didn’t put the rest of the stuff out until Sunday. We aren’t putting out nearly as much as we normally do either.
Wow, you’re all decked out! I love the nutcrackers, and that advent calendar is really special. I’ll bet the kids have many fond memories because of it.
[Tara R.] Jen… thank you! The calendar is one family tradition that neither Hubs or I had as kids. I wanted to give my kids something to remember from their childhood.
Well LOOK at YOU Momma! You’ve got the place all decked out– Here AND at home! I am so jealous. I cannot WAIT for this weekend when I can decorate!
ps: I responded to your comment, in my comments section. It’s something I’m REALLY going to try hard to do. We’ll see how it goes
♥
[Tara R.] Heather… you are going to have so much fun decorating your first home with Curt. Making memories, starting holiday traditions of your own. This is a special time.
Your post today was more than stunning. You have come so far, and achieved so much in the short time I have known you. I am proud of you and can only see wonderful things in your future.
Nice template…!
[Tara R.] Xbox… thanks, glad you like it.
Wow, you’re really in the Holiday Spirit! We usually start with the outside lights at Thanksgiving; the Hubby got everything up and arranged, but when he plugged in everything, it was a No Go. Turns out workmen cut the electricity to our outside socket! We’ll think about tree and the inside of the house next weekend, I think. I like your Advent Calendar idea…so very clever!
[Tara R.] Veggie… the kids love having an excuse to get a present every day in Dec. leading up to Christmas. These are never very much… I keep them to a couple dollars, but it does help get everyone into the season. That sucks about your outside display. I’d try to get those workmen back to fix their error.
Like the new look, and love the decorations; mind if I just pop on over here to get my fix, as we won’t be decorating this year?
[Tara R.] Kori… you are welcome over here anytime, ANYTIME.
I love the new layout and I love all those nutcrackers!
[Tara R.] Anna… thanks! It was actually kinda fun to finally get stuff up.
Love the new look! That advent calendar is a really cool idea. I’m sure if you went huts with it, it could get costly. How did you separate gifts and kids?
[Tara R.] Siobhan… I try to keep the Calendar gifts to $1 or less. When I wrap them I use two different papers, one for each. There are a lot of identical items too, candy, chocolate, stuff like that. But it can still get pricey.
went nuts…nuts.
[Tara R.] Siobhan… yes, we did.
Wow… 22 years of beautiful memories and keepsakes. Im envious.. our tree looks bare. Your house is beautiful. I am in LOVE with Christmas.
[Tara R.] OHMommy… thank you for your sweet compliments. Just wait until your son starts bringing holiday masterpieces home. He will be so proud to have something he made in school hanging on his Christmas tree.
Wow! I just love special momentos you’ve collected over the years. Your tree looks wonderful!
We have very similar storage boxes for our Christmas stuff
[Tara R.] Sandy… that is only a small portion of boxes. It is truly amazing how much ‘STUFF’ we have. This year I only put ornaments with sentimental value on our tree. Things the kids either made for us, or bought for us. You can see we still had tons of ornaments to put on the tree.
INCREDIBLE. I love all the collections and traditions. Nice template, too.
[Tara R.] Angela… thanks! I like having up the decorations early. It does help me get into the whole spirit of the season.
the nutcracker collection is amazing! wonderful decorations!
[Tara R.] Linda S… I’ll pass your compliment on to WK. Thanks!
I love you!
Another one to share my Christmas decoration insanity!
Looks awesome babe.
[Tara R.] Kelley… thanks darlin’. We’re going away at Christmas so it was either put it up early or not at all. ‘Not at all’ didn’t seem like the right option.
Those nutcrackers, WHOA, that is awesome!!!!
And I told the kids that we’d start decorating today, but just too exhausted. You’ve made me want to get off my duff… tomorrow!
Love the look around here too, just sweet.
I love Christmas
[Tara R.] Karen…thanks! WK loves collecting them and finding new and different Nutcrackers.
Everything looks beautiful and homey and fun!
I only did that one year … the year before I had my house fire. After that, I lost all interest in my house and anything prettifying. Now that we have gone back to apartment living, I think I will start managing decorations again!
[Tara R.] Devyl… when I was in high school, living alone with my mom in a small apt., we did it up right for Christmas. The smaller space made what little we had go a long way. I bet you and Tween can make your place look gorgeous for the holidays.
Damn, my Christmas still sits in red and green boxes in the garage awaiting me to bring them in. Procrastination is thy word for me…
Yours looks great. Thanks for sharing the pictures…
[Tara R.] Mike… if it were up to me, ours probably would still be out in the garage in green tubs. But, once we got it all up and out, it really does look nice. Dive into those Christmas tubs and get decorating.
