Junk Drawer Sunday ~ friends and family

2008 November 30

junkdrawer_blog_kyleA huge ‘thank you’ to WK for helping me put together this new graphic for my Sunday blogs.

This is my final daily post for November. WooHoo! I held on through the entire month, and bitch slapped NaBloPoMo! I don’t think I’ll try this again for a while, if ever. It wasn’t difficult to post something everyday for 30 days, but it was an enormous waste commitment of time.

Thanks to everyone for sticking with me and for putting up with some truly odd posts.

WK also made the NaBloPoMo button in my side bar. Very cool, doncha think?

You are the best WK!

Despite my reluctance to get involved in the madness known as Black Friday, I did bow to a very sweet request from my daughter to accompany her and one of her BFFs to the mall. I had snuck out of work early (really I had only tag-teamed with the other remaining manager. I came in early, he came in late.)

The crowds were insane, the lines snaked through, around and outside… OUTSIDE, stores. The three of us only bought one thing each and somehow managed to find the two stores without long lines. I plan to do the majority of my holiday shopping online. So much easier on my sanity.

This wasn’t JM’s first foray into the maelstrom. Having made her initial trip at midnight when she found all her great bargains, this second trip I think was mainly for my benefit. A chance for her and her old mom to hang out. Her friend who went with us is a family favorite so that was a bonus. Just spending the time together made it a fun afternoon.

adventjmSaturday found me sitting on the floor with nearly 50 small gifts piled around me. All in need of wrapping, and all which have to be ready to include in the kids’ advent calendars on December 1. JM returns to school today, and Monday morning I want her to have each of her days filled with a gift.

Late last night I packed the pockets of the big calendar with all WK’s stuff and the last week of JM’s gifts. She’ll finish the month of gift getting at home, pulling her presents from the family calendar.

Hunting for these little bits and pieces has helped get me more into the spirit of the holidays. BAH!

Since JM won’t be back until late December, we also started decorating the house. We put up our tree (yeah, I know it’s sacrilegious to have an artificial tree ~ bite me!) and strung the lights. Sunday the kids spent a good while hanging ornaments and setting out all the other festive paraphernalia. Got lots of help from Pollo, while Hershey seemed completely bored by the whole thing.  Maxx couldn’t even be bothered to get in the photos. I’ll post more decorating pix tomorrow.

christmas-ornament_elements-globe_1995Consider this fair warning, beginning Monday morning I will have IMSO all decorated for Christmas. I’ll put everything back after the holidays, but for the next few weeks, it’s going to look festive over here, cheerful… all red and green. There may be a plate of homemade cookies out, or I’ll offer you a cup of warm wassail, or some egg nog (spiked, of course).

I absolutely love decorating for Christmas – both my home and my blog. We’re getting everything down from that attic today and I will decorate, decorate, decorate!!!

[Tara R.] Danielle… I hope that decorating will get me out of my holiday funk. I’m just not feeling it yet.

    Congratulations on getting through NaBloPoMo.

Christmas decorating is fun. Well I still got to buy stuff to decorate our house with and I can’t decide on anything yet to start of our own tradition but it’s definitely going to be fun.

[Tara R.] Kat… I have never been so happy about the end of the month. We will be decorating like fiends today. Hopefully get it all done in one day.

Love the NABLOPOMO icon…WK is crafty, indeed! My 2 just went back to college this morning. Now I know what Shakespeare meant when he wrote, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.” We did have a kickin’ time, though! I only wish they didn’t have to travel thru a snowstorm to get home!

[Tara R.] Veggie… the boy has some mad skillz. I just had to tell him what I wanted and viola’. I hope your young’uns have a safe trip back to school. It does get a little harder each time them leave though.

WK rocks – as do you! I’m desperate to learn how to make buttons. Any sites he can recommend?

[Tara R.] April… I try to find free images, and he adds the text with our graphics software. It’s not very cosmic, but it’s working for me.

Congrats on completing Nablopomo!! I’m ready to hibernate, you?
Seeing that pile of gifts made me tired and this season hasn’t even gotten started yet.
Can’t wait to see your new Christmas look!

[Tara R.] IBHH… I can’t even think about doing a 31/31 in Deceember. There is just too much going on. Maybe after the first of the year. Congrats to you too. I am definitely ready to take a break from daily posting.

You did it! Congrats on 30 posts in 30 days!! I see from my e-mail that NaBloPoMo has a December Challenge, but haven’t yet checked it out. WK is a computer genius! Do you think you could lend him out to us for a few days? BTW, don’t forget to tune in to Sx3 today…we’ve got the Holiday Spirit!

[Tara R.] Melissa B… whew! I’m so done with that. The kid is do a really nice job for me. I can’t wait to see today’s Sx3.

You make your own advent calendar? How cool!

[Tara R.] Jen… I made it when the kids were very young. It’s a beast. The pockets are about 4×5-inches.

I feel you on NaBloPoMo. I’m so ready for it to be done. But hey, at least we bitch slapped it together, and didn’t give in, not ONCE. It’s funny, I thought it’d be so easy but for me, the hardest part was posting the blog post before midnight, since I’m usually a “12 a.m. – 5 a.m.” poster with my insomniac ramblings.

    Anyways, enough of that.

It sounds like you had a great time with your family over the little “break” and I’m glad that you and JM got to spend some mom/daughter time together cause I know you’ve been missing her.

We don’t have much up this year, since we’re just starting up and all, so I’m trying hard to get into the holiday spirit. I did “spice up” my blog though.

    Love you Momma! :D

[Tara R.] Heather… I’m glad it did the month-long posting, but I’m glad it’s over. Having to post, was frustrating sometimes, but at least I have a few post drafts in my queue in case I need a quick idea later.

    Congrats on getting through NaBloPoMo!

    [Tara R.] Cyndy… happy dance!

It was not wasted time, I enjoyed every blog! Can’t wait to see the decoration pictures.

[Tara R.] Mama W…. thanks! I may still post every day, but because I want to, not because I HAVE too. Hope you like the holiday decorations.

  11. 2008 November 30

I am soo excited that you kicked the arse out of NaBlogPoMo!!! Way to go.. I decorated the entire house this weekend.. we get our tree in about ten days.. but the rest of the house is now in the spirit.. :)

[Tara R.] Kim… we got most of our decorating done too. I’ve always had a hard time getting into the season since moving to Florida. It just doesn’t seem like December when temps are still in the 60s and 70s.

Oooh, you’re decorating for Christmas? What a great idea! I’m coming by for eggnog.

Congrats on making it through NaBlo…whateverwhatever. I enjoyed it, and found myself thinking as I read your post, “It’s over already?” Of course I’m sure I’d feel differently if I had participated myself.

[Tara R.] Terri… NaBlo was fun, but the pressure to perform was crazy some days. I’m glad to be back to posting just when I want… even if it is nearly every day. I hope you like the holiday decorations.

Kudos on NaBloPoMo! I was surprised I hung on, and glad I did!

I can’t wait to see what you do with this place for the holidays. :)

    xo

[Tara R.] Devyl… congrats to you too! Still, I am glad I did it, but equally glad it’s over! It’s going to look all shiny and holiday-ish.

I’m soooo missing my Hershey this year. It’s my first Christmas without him in 14 years, and I’m sad. Then I read your blog and saw his little twin on your page. Sigh…I’m so glad you have yours. Please enjoy him.

[Tara R.] Kim… I am so sorry about your Lab. I know how hard it would be to lose one of the girls. They do become such a huge part of the family. Our Hershey is lying beside me right now, snoring her little doggie snuffles. I’ll give her a hug from you.
