The older woman…
She’s a little older than WK, but I think she’ll suit him well. He’s excited about her coming to live with us and admits he’ll be giving her a nickname… I like that, even if I never know what it is.
Hopefully she’ll also be a great motivator for him to do better with his time management and getting his school work finished. WK knows he can’t play with her until he gets all his other obligations finished. Sorry for her if he doesn’t do that, but that was the deal when Hubs and I agreed to take her in.
We also agreed to keep her in gas and insurance. We’ll pay for the majority of pieces-parts, at least until WK can get a job and earn his own maintenance funds. The idea is to let him work on her, and make her uniquely his own.
She runs, idles a bit high, but Hubs thinks that will be an easy fix. At 18, she has a few miles on her, but has new belts and hoses, the interior is very nice for her age, and WK is already in love. Her paint still looks nice, but we’ll be stripping all the cheap pinstriping off of her, cleaning her up and giving her a professional waxing.
In the fine tradtion of father/son bonding, we bought WK a car for the two of them to rebuild. Of course, he can’t drive it until he’s 16, until it’s running right, until it has insurance and tags. She’s his, she’s not a hand-me-down from his sister, and right now that’s the most important thing.

Tell WK congrats on the new wheels. If I remember correctly, my first car died on the way home and had to be repaired before I could use it. Nice to see the Hubs is carrying on the family tradition (except I didn’t have to do the work on mine!)
[Tara R.] Dina… ever wish you still had the Vega? I miss my first car.
Sometimes an Older Woman can be Just the Trick! You’ll keep us updated, I hope, on the progress WK & his Dad make in giving her a facelift? Think that Nifty New Nikon will be Just the Ticket!
[Tara R.] Melissa B… we’ve already taken about 50 pix of her already just so we can track the improvements. Our own ‘before’ and ‘after’ shots. I think they are both very excited about this.
Wow, nicer than my first car. A 1985 vette. That’s che-vette!
[Tara R.] Hockeyman… the men folk are going to have so much fun fixing her up. I’m excited for them. Che-vette! HA!
My uncle worked on several cars with my cousin. I come from a family of all girls, so we never really had that attraction, but I used to go over to my Aunt and Uncle’s house to watch the progress. Congrats to WK–I’m sure his new relationship will be successful!
[Tara R.] Veggie… I haven’t seen him this excited about anything other than when we got him his cat a couple years ago. He is definitely motivated, at least for now.
My son is scoping out cars everywhere he goes! It’s only a matter of time. Bet your boy is in heaven!
[Tara R.] Forz… I don’t think his feet have touched the ground since we brought the car home. I stopped counting how many time he went out to just sit in it.
AWWWW! i am SO excited for WK!
Congrats to him!
[Tara R.] Heather… I’ll pass the congrats on to him. He is pretty stoked about the whole thing.
Yay… those are much classier wheels than my first. Congrats!
[Tara R.] OHMommy… he is very excited. I’ll post new pix as progress is being made.
i can’t believe he’s not getting my hand-me-down!! there goes my plans for a new car!! geez!!
[Tara R.] JM… in honor of that, WK has named her ‘Hanmi.’
I can imagine WK’s bursting with pride right about now! What a great idea. Can’t wait to see the progress.
[Tara R.] Terri… he can’t stop smiling and he keeps coming over to me and saying ‘I love that car!’ Yeah, I think he’s a little proud.
The joys of having a son! Sounds like such fun!
[Tara R.] Nola… I think this, having a project car, is something universal among dads and sons. But, daughters can be just as interested in cars… hmmm?
That is such an awesome father/son tradition…it’ll make turning 16 and getting his license so much sweeter.
[Tara R.] Huck… I cannot believe how excited this kid was. I think it will be great for him, and for him and his dad. He was taking photos of it on his phone so he can show his friends at school. The first person he called Saturday when it was delivered to the house was his sister. He woke her up. It’s been great fun so far.
wow you spoiled the boy
[Tara R.] Beany… I know, but he is really going to have to work for this car. He won’t be able to just drive off with it.
I can hear your pride bursting in this post. I know you’re thankful and proud that you can provide this for WK. And I know you’ll make him thankful and proud when he earns it!
[Tara R.] April… he washed the car for the first time this weekend. He took three hours to clean it. I’ve never seen him be more thorough. I really hope his works out like we hope for it to.
