What I did on my Labor Day vacation
We spent a good part of Sunday morning storm proofing trees. Hubs clipped limbs, as I pulled the branches down so he could reach them without a ladder. After we had a dozen or so piles, I started dragging them to the curb. While I dragged, Hubs went to work pruning a large shrub close to the house.
The longer I dragged and stacked branches, the longer it seemed Hubs was taking on his task of shaping up a single plant.
Me: ‘You sure are taking a long time on that bush.’
Hubs: ‘Never thought I’d hear that complaint.’

Sunday afternoon we finally made it to the annual Greek Festival in town. Every Labor Day weekend Saints Markella and Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church sponsors a three-day food fest. We ate pastitsio, souvláki, mousaká, gyros, dolmádes, spanakópita, and salads with feta cheese and kalamata olives. These were all homemade by the church women.
After stuffing ourselves on this fabulous food, we brought home samples of some most delicious sweets. We had baklava, chocolate tortes, kataifi, and kourabiethes.
I look forward to this event every year, and always eat far too much.

I’ve done a lot of PLURKING too. I didn’t expect it to be as much fun as it has been. I’ve connected with some of my bloggy pals in real time and that’s been enlightening. I’ve also been making new friends from Australia, England, Canada, Ireland, India, the Netherlands and Mexico. I’ve connected with other Floridians, and have commiserated with Gustav evacuees. If you’re not already on Plurk, come join the fun. If you are, come find me and let’s talk.

Monday morning, knowing I still had tons of work to do for one of my project deadlines, and knowing that while I could most likely get it done Tuesday morning, well inside the timeline, I toyed with the idea of going into the office for a couple of hours to knock out some of the less mind numbing tasks.
That was until I saw this… this being the radar image of Gustav plowing into the the LA coast. This being a visual depiction of a mother of a storm, and its tendrils of feeder bands and wind whipping tail smacking the Florida coast… where I live.

Knowing that we weren’t going to fall victim to the full force of the storm was encouraging, but with forecasts of winds gusting near 25 mph, coupled with the tornado warnings and heavy rain predictions, and knowing that I would have to drive across this, this nearly 4-mile long bridge (have I mentioned how much I hate bridges, even in nice weather?), I decided to stay home and hope for the best come Tuesday morning.

Egads! I would not want to drive that bridge either!!!
[Tara R.] Sue… it’s not all that bad in good weather, but in stuff like we’re getting now, it’s hard to fight the wind.
That bridge is beautiful! I am in awe of the workmanship that went into it. But I’m still glad you decided to stay home, and glad that you are not among the victims of the grizzly Gustav.
[Tara R.] April… oddly enough, many people didn’t want this bridge built. They said it wouldn’t be used enough to be cost effective. It was paid off 2-3 year early and is not a major hurricane evacuation route. It’s still one long stinkin’ bridge.
This post has everything I like. “Sex” (bush comment), “Food” (Greek), “Chatting” (Plurking which I haven’t tried yet), and “Suspense” (Gustav)
This is what I call a complete Labor Day break.
[Tara R.] Chris… I’ll send you an invite for Plurk, you can try it just to see if you like it. Glad you enjoy the full-course post.
Glad things worked out for you, Gustav-wise. I had My Hubby hard at work on bushes of the vegetative variety last weekend. And good think I did, ’cause he’s sick as a dog this weekend…poor baby! Wish I could join you at the Greek Festival–Baklava would be just the treat to get me out of my going-back-to-school funk. No, not really–I’m actually pretty excited–except for that waking up early thing. I guess this is where we differ–I LOVE bridges. But certainly understand your decision to skip work on this Lovely Labor Day. My philosophy? Work Can Always Wait!
[Tara R.] Melissa B… it was good to get all the trees and shrubs cleaned out, and the food on Sunday afternoon was incredible. You can still have the bridges. I’ll just admire them from afar
Teach that man the benefits of ’slow and deliberate’. I’m just sayin’.
[Tara R.] Lou… he just wanted to make sure the job was done well and satisfactory.
I love your husband; hilarious!
[Tara R.] Forz… me too.
He knows how to even make yard work fun.
Yummy–I LOVE Greek food! Looks liked you labored a fair amount this Labor Day. I didn’t do much but kick around. Oh, and I figured out how to make a cool slide show of our beach pixes. I’m mighty proud of it! Have a great rest of long weekend, and hope your project comes together tomorrow!
[Tara R.] Veggie… it was a fairly productive weekend. Hopefully by this time tomorrow (6 p.m. CDT) ALL of my projects will be done. Woohoo!
WOW – a jammed packed weekend for sure.
Your hubby cracks me up!!!
Mmmmmmmm Greek food….yummy!
My heart goes out to all battling the storm.
[Tara R.] Laura… it was really a good weekend. I am glad to hear that the storm didn’t do terrible damage and is finally blowing itself out.
This is the 3rd time in 2 days I’ve seen spanakópita mentioned. I’ve never had it but I’m going to try to make some, it sounds SO good!
Hope y’all stayed safe from Gustav.
I just don’t ever have time to Plurk, I gave up.
[Tara R.] Cyndy… spanakópita is awesome. It is really very delicious. Gustav dumped a little rain on us, but nothing very bad.
Sometime during the tree trimming exercise I would’ve suddenly remembered that I left the iron on, gone back inside, and not come back out until all the work was done.
[Tara R.] Dingo… if I didn’t know that I would have had to do the work anyway, I think that plan would work.
I have just recently developed a fear of bridges myself. I was driving over the one to the US a few weeks ago and suddenly I felt panic. It was horrible!
[Tara R.] Eve… first of all …. congrats you are my 5,000th commenter! I used to love bridges, but they just give me the willies now.
There would be no way on this green earth that you could get me on that bridge during a storm. None.
[Tara R.] Kori… that’s why I stayed home Monday. During a storm a few years ago, a friend of mine said she saw a water spout cross this same bridge at the mid point. I would have peed myself.
I completely lost my ability to focus after the bush comment. When I guffawed, my 11yo said, “What?” Some things you just can’t answer.
Glad you’re OK after Gustav–and I would’ve foregone the bridge, too. Egads!
[Tara R.] Angela… I’m forever laughing out loud at something someone wrote in a blog and then can’t really explain it to anyone. Gustav stayed away from us, we got some rain, at least enough to keep my home.
Snicker!
That food looks yummy!
[Tara R.] Mozi Mom… *blush* I look forward to this festival every year, just for the food.
It’s always nice when the husbands are as funny as the bloggers. Sounds like a grand time in some ways. Here’s hoping you don’t get too bad of a pounding.
[Tara R.] Patois… even we are doing yard work, Hubs and I find a way to make it fun. The storm was far enough away to just dump rain and not much else.
I don’t think I would have ventured over that bridge either!
[Tara R.] Anna… I knew my fellow bloggers were a smart lot. I really don’t like bridges, but especially in bad weather.
It sounds like you had a good weekend, and I hope that you were able to avoid the storm as best as possible! I’ve been thinking of you!
[Tara R.] Heather… we were far enough away from the main force of the storm, that all we got was rain. Early Monday some of the gust were fairly strong, but not enough to damage anything.
Wow! A 4 mile bridge! That would totally freak me out. And you drive this daily???? I can’t even imagine driving over that in a storm.
Sounds like you had a busy weekend. I am now hungry for some Gyros & Baklava……
[Tara R.] Bad Momma… I drive it twice a day, sometimes more. It is the closest route to my job. To avoid it I would have to drive 20 miles out of my way… which I have done on occasion.
HA…your husband and mine would get along just fine. I’m starting a new rule in my house….a 3 sexual joke limit a day. So everything I say can’t be turned around on me in that manner.
Plurking? Man just one more thing to add to my slowly growing internet addiciton huh?
I’m glad you’re all okay so far but please keep us posted on you and your home, and friends and family.
[Tara R.] Kim… I may have to enforce the same rule. I’ll send you a pluck invite… try it out if you like. I think you’ll recognize a lot of the bloggers on there.
..the bush thing…lol..that was good!
Ugg we had a greek festival too, I forgot, darn it!!
I can’t plurk…I tried, I twitter
[Tara R.] MP… plurk is a lot of work sometimes… like right now I’m a little overwhelmed at work and I have 250 unread threads in my reader. I may just have to mark them ‘all read’ and start over this afternoon.
Sounds like you had a busy & productive Labor Day Weekend. And, cleared out those trees and shrubs just in time!
I, too, hate bridges. I’m not sure where that comes from. Living in FL most of my life, being FROM FL, you’d think that I would just see them as an extension of the road. I do not. I also do not like grated walkways – like on a pier? Those freak me out. Gah!
[Tara R.] Dveyl… I know what you mean. Crossing any road where I’m completely surrounded by water and land is not close enough to walk or even swim to, is unnerving.
That fooooood!!! MMMMM. Boston, where I grew up, had a sizable Greek population. Here in LA? None. I miss Greek food. And that was the best yardwork joke I have heard in a long time. Ok, ever.
[Tara R.] BD… same for me on the Greek food. Where we moved from in Tennesse, big Greek community, so I was thrilled to find this festival. It’s now a yearly ‘must’ for us. I know you’ll be just waiting for the time when you can use that joke.
hey littermate TARa!
ahhh you are a treat!
morning doll, beany
[Tara R.] Beany! … good morning sweetie, good to see you out and about again.
hi TARa,
glad to hear gustav did not wreck ya. i was worried about you and your peeps.
great day sweetie, beany
[Tara R.] Beany… yeah, it was all good. After awhile it was apparent we weren’t going to get anything major from the storm and just went about our day as usual. It looks like Ike will miss us too.
Love our Greek Fest!!! I am on Plurk but much prefer Twitter–that’s where all the NOLA folks are
[Tara R.] Nola… I have hard enough time keeping up with my blog, Plurk and cre8Buzz… I would have to quit my job to add anything else.
