It’s for you…

2008 August 22

Hubs got me my first cell phone about two weeks before JM’s due date. He wanted me to be able to call him from anywhere if I went into labor and wasn’t at home. We had the phone for about two weeks. JM continues to be very prompt to this day.

Before that, I never wanted a cell phone. I thought they were intrusive and didn’t think I would ever use it. Was I ever wrong.

Now, if I’ve left the house and forgot my phone, I will turn around and go back home to get it. I feel almost naked without it. If I can’t reach Hubs or one of my children on the first call attempt, I get obsessed with calling them, continually, until they pick up.

With all the features that today’s phone offer ~ caller ID, texting, voice mail ~ one of the most fun is the ability to download songs as ringtones. Everyone can have their own theme song. How cool it that?

Each of my peeps has a special song that when I hear it playing, I immediately think of them. So, for this post, I give you ringtones for my family and me.

The boy and I have a unique dynamic. We can joke around about almost anything.

We share a disturbing love of ‘Your mama…’ and ‘… that’s what she said’ jokes. There have been occasions that we’ve even made Hubs blush.

I can drift JM’s Neon around rain slick ess-curves, and am honing my reputation as a kick-ass mother. I am the cool parent.

So, when deciding on a ringtone that would be appropriate to fully demonstrate the loving, nurturing and motherly connection WK and I have, I give you this heartwarming tune.

(Here is also little family secret ~ WK goes by his middle name. He shares a first name with his dad.)

JM has always been an ‘I can do it myself’ kind of kid. I think that was actually the first full sentence she said.

She has an strong independent spirit and a drive to become her own person. This sense of self-assuredness has on occasion been a little difficult to accept, especially when she wasn’t even a teenager.

Now, that she’s moving into her own place, taking the next step in living totally on her own, JM is taking control of her life.

The version of this song is a bit different, but then, so is JM.

I’ve told you all before about how I believe that I dreamed about Hubs well before we met. I didn’t even tell him about this dream until we had been together for quite awhile. When this song was released in 1999, more than 10 years after we were married, and more than 15 years after that dream, I finally told him about it.

Even though this song is exceptionally cheesy, it’s the perfect tune to explain what I felt.

I tried to think of a song that best personified me. One that if heard, anyone would immediately know that the call was from me.

Since this song, and my affection for it, had such a profound effect on WK, and because whenever I hear it I crank the radio to 11, I pick this song as my ringtone.

My mom always reminded me of Julie Andrews, especially as Mary Poppins. If you ever read the P. L. Travers books, you would probably be surprised to learn that she was nothing like the Disney character. My mom was the nice one.

My dad and I have had a tumultuous relationship. It took many years after he and my mom finally separated for me to learn to like him again. In those intervening years he grew up a lot and I came to the realization that there are many things I have no control over and to let those things mess with my head was hurting no one but me.

It may be an unease friendship at times, but I can say my dad and I are friends again. Can’t trust him any further than I can throw him, but we’re friends.

I have only one biological brother and we don’t, have never and will never, get along. I don’t know what it is about me that he doesn’t like, but I could fill a book about him. Suffice it to say I think he is an arrogant, judgmental and pompous ass.

Now it’s your turn… what song would you ~ have you, picked for your personal ringtone, or tones for your peeps?

awww, none of the songs worked for me. Sometimes Firefox gets bogged down and wont play. I have to go shut everything down and start FF back up . I’ll have to swing by again to hear ‘em! “That’s what SHE said!”
    *laugh*

[Tara R.] Birdie!… dangit… I didn’t think about Firefox not working with these mp3. I set it up at home on Safari, but mine worked on Firefox in the office *sigh*. Hopefully, you’ll get to check out the songs later.

I love that Pearl Jam song-adore it. Love it. In case you didn’t get the hint, I LOVE that song. For many, many reasons, and I love the pick to describe the relationship with your daughter. Tell me, can I do this one on my own blog next week? But how, how how do I embed a single song in the actual content? What a great post.

[Tara R.] Kori… I’m not sure how Blogger does it, but it’s easy to do with WordPress. Go to someplace like this, grab the URL of a song you want (the code should end in mp3), click on the HTML tab when you’re writing the post, add the code link with this add on – [audio URL] – it should look a little like this [audio http://blahblah.blah.mp3

If that doesn’t work email me and I can help you out.

Being a huge fan of Rod Stewart and knowing they are my biggest asset, I’ve always wanted my ringtone on my husband’s phone to be Hot Legs. He doesn’t really like the song so he would never do it. Boo.

[Tara R.] Allie… boo is right. Hubs is definitely not a Savage Garden fan either. That’s a great Stewart song. I almost picked that one for JM too. She is tall and slender, all leg.

Some of mine are appropriate, some I just have so I can hear songs I like. :)

My relationship with my father is much like yours. For his ringtones; (when things are okay..)’ Like to get to know you well’ by Howard Jones, and (when things are not so good)’ It’s my Life’ ,the No Doubt version.

For one friend who I love but can never get off the phone it’s “Talk Talk’ (by Talk Talk). lol

[Tara R.] Nissa… love the songs. I have a friend that should have ‘Talk, Talk’ as her ring tone too. :D

Cyndy Lauper’s Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, but of course! :) I wanna dance every time the phone rings!

[Tara R.] Melissa B… ‘that’s all they really want!’ I would be dancing too, great song!

I hope that my girls find their way to the same acceptance w/ their dad that you’ve find with yours. One of my big fears is that he’ll end up living off of Sylvia one day. I need for her to learn that he’s not trustworthy.
    Sorry, I’m a little off-topic here, aren’t I? Awesome song pics!

[Tara R.] April… you’re teaching your girls to be independent smart women, I can’t imagine either of them letting themselves be taken advantage of, even by their dad. Did you also check out the tunes too? Just click on the widgets.

I love that about Mary Poppins…I still sing that song more often than I should admit…

I think my ringtone would most definitely be a Pink song, in fact, I was just listening to her before I came to your blog. I have no idea how to even change the ringtones on my phone….I know, how sad.

[Tara R.] Melinda… I have to get my son to help me change my tones. I haven’t even activated my voice mail option. That’s sad.

I am so oldschool with my phone..I only have the classic ring to it..and I barely program numbers..hahaha..

[Tara R.] Kim… my son had to help me set my rings up… I can’t even program my voice mail. blah!
