I made good on my threat.

After work tonight, I met my peeps for dinner, an early celebration for the college kid’s birthday on Wednesday (more on that later).

I had stopped at the Big & Normous bookstore and that’s when I saw the poor thing, a small shaggy dog locked inside a vehicle outside the store. My car gauge registered an outside temp of about 90º F, so the interior temp of the little black truck had to be close to 100º.

I was so angry, I started shaking. A couple of doors down in the walking mall was a pet boutique. I had met the store owner before and thought she would be sympathetic. She loaned me her phone and between the two of us, we were finally able to reach the proper authorities.

That’s right, I called 911 and reported a dog in distress, a possible case of animal cruelty.

A very nice Deputy G met me outside the bookstore and promised to find the dog’s owner. I left him my name and phone number ~ none of that candy ass anonymous shit. I was pissed and wanted to make a statement. (Just so you know, I’ve also called the police when I found two infants inside an unattended car.)

Before the deputy arrived, I estimate the dog had been inside that hot car, windows down only about three inches, for more than 20 minutes. We know what can happen in that short period of time.

I have the deputy’s business card. He said I could check with him later to find out if the dog was okay. Hopefully the incident made an impression on the dog’s owner. And, hopefully that poor dog will survive it’s owner.

Wow, I’m glad you did. Really glad. Poor dog.

[Tara R.] Ashley… I was still keyed up when I met my peeps at a nearby restaurant. Fortunately, Hubs was very supportive, and my kids said they thought I did the right thing too.

I’m proud of you for calling. GUTSY, but more so, RIGHT.

[Tara R.] Zoeyjane… I can’t complain then not do anything when I see this happen. I think you all make me braver than I would have been before.

Good for you!! Although I am glad you left before the owner was found…wouldn’t want you to commit any crime of passion :)

[Tara R.] April… I did do a drive by about 30 minutes later. Both the deputy and the truck were gone. I’d be interested to see if a report was filed. I need to call later to find out what happened. I have a friend who is a deputy, maybe I could call him.

    good job TARa.

    nighty night, beany :)

[Tara R] Beany… I was glad I called. I’m anxious to find out what happened.

GOOD FOR YOU! People are so stupid -leaving kids and pets in cars….makes me very very mad. Way to take control. I hope and pray the puppy is OK.

[Tara R.] Laura… it didn’t look happy when I saw it. I hope it was okay too.

  6. 2008 August 4

It’s so sad that people can be so irresponsible with their pets. Good for you for doing the right thing.

[Tara R.] Allie… it gets so hot here where I live, I can’t believe anyone would think it’s safe to leave kids and pets inside a hot car like that.

  7. 2008 August 5

Good on you! Oh does it drive me bonkers when people leave their pets in their car.

Please do tell us what happened with the owners!

[Tara R.] Jill… if I can find out and if anything was actually done… fines, charges that sort of thing, I’ll do an update.

  8. 2008 August 5

Yeah! People who would do that to their dogs do not deserve to be pet owners. Good for you! Please tell us what happened.

[Tara R.] Dingo… whether it’s ignorance, or indifference, I agree. If you can’t or won’t care for your pet find them a decent home with someone else.

  9. 2008 August 5

Good for you! I’m so glad you helped that poor dog. I almost did the same thing today, except the people came back before I had a chance. And I was thinking of TAKING the damned dog, it looked too thin, too.
If you want to get madder, read by latest blog post….

[Tara R.] Cyndy… you know how hot and humid it gets here… just standing outside waiting on the deputy, I was sweating buckets. Inside the car had to be like an oven, no shade, out in the full sun… this was around 5:30p. I was just pissed.

I’m so glad you did this! I plan on following your example in the future. Thanks.

[Tara R.] Danielle… I would have been worried sick if I had left that dog and not done anything. I will do it again.

“I saw the poor thing, a small shaggy dog locked inside a vehicle outside the store”

When I worked as a manager at Harris Teeter people would come in frequently complaining about people leaving dogs in their car with the windows up. They wanted us to call the cops. But we had a store policy that dictated we couldn’t call the cops, but we would let them use our phone. ;-)

[Tara R.] TT… that’s why I went to the pet boutique. I knew the owner would help me get this dog some help. She was great.

  12. 2008 August 5

go, you! I have done the same with kids- the car was running- I know the mom may have thought that was OK, but I thought it was really dangerous!

[Tara R.] Tenakim… I made that call when a grandmother left two kids in a car while she went grocery shopping. Incredible!

  13. 2008 August 5

Yay for you! It SHOULD be done. I have called about kids left in cars before, too, but never a dog-not because I don’t care, but because I haven’t ever actually witnessed it firsthand. Here in the sticks they are usually in the back of pickups or in some lady’s purse. :) I am so proud to know you!

[Tara R.] Kori… people around here leave their pets in their cars a lot. A lot of tourist bring their dogs with them, then realize they can’t take them everywhere so leave them in the car. Locals just don’t care.

  14. 2008 August 5

Good for you. Well done. No pun intended.

    [Tara R.] Lou… you’re bad. ;)

  15. 2008 August 5

    Good for you!

[Tara R.] Mozi Mommy… I hope it truly made a difference.

  16. 2008 August 5

i’m so proud of you!!! i can’t stand when people leave animals and kids in the car…regardless of the weather…although heat and cold…that pisses me off worse. but…yay for you!! i hope the dog is ok!!
    xoxo

[Tara R.] Mel… I hope the dog is okay too. I need to call the deputy to find out.

  17. 2008 August 5

A random act of kindness indeed…

[Tara R.] Chris… I’m working on my karma. I can’t stand to see a helpless animal suffer.

  18. 2008 August 5

Good for you, Tara! I thought you were going to add that you gave that butt hole a good piece of your mind, too–but I’ll bet that comes next! Any way of following up with the cops to see who the negligent doggy owner was? You KNOW how karma works, though, and when you come back, you’ll come back as a little shaggy doggy whose owner treats her right! :) BTW, we’re having a little fun over in Scribeville this week. Be mighty pleased if my Doggy Hero Friend would drop by! :)

[Tara R.] Melissa B… the deputy gave me his card and I called today to find out what happened. If he calls me back, I’ll give everyone an update.

  19. 2008 August 5

Rah rah rah for you! Thank God you happened upon that poor little dog.

[Tara R.] Patois… I hope the deputy gets back to me about how it all turned out…

  20. 2008 August 5

Good for you. I also would not hesitate to do this & would happily confront the person who did it. Stupidity should not be side-stepped.

[Tara R.] Eve… if I didn’t have to meet my peeps for dinner, I would have stayed to see the person responsible. I was curious who would do this.

  21. 2008 August 5

Some people are just plain idiotic! I’m glad you did something.

[Tara R.] Forz… it’s truly amazing how ignorant some people really are.

  22. 2008 August 5

Dude, that totally ticks me off. I am so glad you called; I would have done the same thing. That owner should be jailed for a day in a hot cell with no fresh air –see how they like it…

[Tara R.] Melinda… perfect… that is exactly what the punishment should be. Remember too, no shade and no water.

  23. 2008 August 6

Stupid, uncaring people should not have animals–or children!! Kudos to you for calling the authorities! If you hear anything else, please let me know!

[Tara R.] Stacey… I called the deputy yesterday and keep checking the police blotter in the paper. I really didn’t expect much to happen, I just hope it scared the bejeezue out of the dog’s owner.

  24. 2008 August 6

People are so stupid. Why would anyone leave a dog or another PERSON in a car. I can’t even leave a plant in the car when it’s hot. Good for you for making the call.

[Tara R.] Lauren… I know what you mean, I was going to buy a plant for my office that same evening, but knew I would have to leave it in the car while we were at dinner and thought it would die in the heat before I got home. A PLANT! and this idiot left a living, breathing creature in a oven, hot car!

  25. 2008 August 6

AAARRGH! That stuff just pisses me the hell off! You did the right thing. With all these news stories about kids and pets dying in cars, you’d think these knuckleheads would get a clue. “It’s not your business” my ass!

[Tara R.] BD… I’ve even thought about making up cards to put on car windows…’the police have been called, your cruelty has been reported… have a nice day.’

  26. 2008 August 6

Bravo! Hello, it’s FLORIDA and, uh, SUMMER!!! Shame, shame. You should have to take a class to be a pet owner….

[Tara R.] Nola… some people are just plain stupid.

  27. 2008 August 10

IDK what is wrong with some people!

[Tara R.] Sexy… if there is such a thing as karma, I hope people like that come back as neglected dogs.
