(not) Random Wednesday – limits

2008 July 14
by Tara R.

My rude wake up call Sunday put the fear of fat into me. That painfully graphic demonstration that I have let myself go was enough to make me put a plan into motion. It also made me take stock of what were reasonable expectations, rational and reachable goals. I have to ‘know my limits.’

•It is not within my limits to squeeze myself back into my high school size 10s.

•It is not within my limits to starve myself until I reach a desirable weight.

•It is not within my limits to expect instant results… it took 40+ years to reach this state, it will take more than 40 days to reach my goal weight.

•It is within my limits to be careful of what and how much I eat.

•It is within my limits to be more physically active.

•It is within my limits to not be so hard on myself and know that I am more than a number on a scale.

‘You’re never beaten until you admit it.’ ~ George Patton (U.S. Army General, WWII, 1885-1945)

‘The first and the best victory is to conquer self.’ ~  Plato (Classical Greek philosopher, 434 BC – 347 BC)

‘Don’t dig your grave with your own knife and fork.’ ~ English Proverb

‘Stressed spelled backwards is desserts.  Coincidence?  I think not!’ ~ Anonymous

A heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all of you who left encouragements and support. It meant more than I can say. I’m posting this (non) Random Wednesday early because I will be presenting my 1st Blogaversary Q&A on Wednesday.

Hi Tara – I just wanted to stop by and say hi and thank you for your lovely comment on my post over at 5MFSN the other day.

Your post here is inspiring too — something I am working on as well.

I hope to see you often over at 5MFSN!

Michelle @ 5MFSN and In The Life of a Child

[Tara R.] Childlife… thanks for stopping by. 5MFSN looks like it will be a great resource for me and a place I can go to share info with other parents of special needs kids. I look forward to visiting often.

Well said my dear, well said.

[Tara R.] Allie… I hope my determination lasts longer than my craving for chips and salsa. :P

  3. 2008 July 15

Ugh, my achilles heel…lack of instant results. I feel the burn..but i still see it, that’s the hardest…HARDEST for me!

    I’m right here with you!

[Tara R.] Mom… I heard that! What kills me is working so hard to watch what I eat, getting out a walking or working in the yard, all that and still gaining weight. It’s a morale killer for sure.

  4. 2008 July 15

I am way to anorexic in waiting to ever actually burn my scale, so I’ll tell you my little trick:

Let your husband flood the potty. Twice. Keep the scale under the potty both times.

Give the kids a bath in the jacuzzi tub, make sure the bubbles get 10 feet tall and they splash all over the floor. Keep the scale at the foot of the tub.

Don’t replace the scale. The only number you’ll be able to read on the dial is the 1. It’s awesome. You get to dream up your own weight!

[Tara R.] Mr Lady… I have a walk-in shower, maybe I can just bring the scales in there… that might just work! Thanks!

morning TARa! absolutely. you are so much more than whatever the number on your scale says. glad the encouragement/notes helped, too. i think you are awesome. you crack me up. i can just hear your adorable southern accent as you giggle or gush. you do rawk. thanks for being such a sweetheart to me all the time. you are consistent. take care, beany :)

[Tara R.] Beany… morning sunshine! Thanks for all your encouragement and support too. You are the best!

  6. 2008 July 15

awh thanks. i need encouragement and support now, too. i hate my job. i wish so much that i had not said yes to this latest position. i am stuck with this until i can move on. i don’t want this (overworked, too much of a project workload) to suck the life out of me. was very discouraged and frustrated about this at work yesterday because no surprise, even more projects were added to my plate. i either wanted to yell or laugh, it is insane. i only do as much as i can do each workday and i don’t stay late. so thanks for the lift this morning. take care, beany

[Tara R.] Beany… I’m so sorry you’re unhappy with your new job. I’m here if you want to vent or rant. Littermates have to stick together. :D

What a great inspirational post….’I am more than a number on the scale’….time for me to ditch that scale…I have had it hidden in the closet for several years now ;)

[Tara R.] Danielle… I need to put my scales away too and instead just judge myself on how I feel and how my clothes fit.

  8. 2008 July 15

You are so very right…and I need to remember your words…I am struggling…

[Tara R.] Laura… add to everything medical conditions that affect my ability to exercise and meds that wack-out my metabolism, it’s a wonder I am not as big as a house. It is a struggle for a lot of people like me.

  9. 2008 July 15

Good luck! I’ll try to remember your words as I try to loose a few pounds myself!

[Tara R.] Anna… we should all be blogging-waist buster buddies! :P

  10. 2008 July 15

There ya go. Right on the money. And be sure to post nude pictures when you get to the weight you find reasonable. Okay? (mumbles*can’t blame a guy for tryin’*)

[Tara R.] lceel… good thing I have put my cuppa down or I would have spewed hot tea over my monitor. I really appreciate the laugh!

I can’t say anything different than what the others have said; I LOVE that you are identifying your limits, I think it is huge. For me, it is, “What am I willing to sacrifice in order to look like I did before I had four kids? Hm, nothing. I love bread, I am not giving it up. but i AM willing to be more active, and to eat only one piece of pizza…you know. It’s all about compromise.

[Tara R.] Kori… good for you! Bread isn’t a problem for me, I’ve even been know to scrap all the pizza topping off the crust and just eat that. Salads are great by me… but it’s all those salty, crunching nibbles that are my downfall – corn chips, potato chips, fries… ahhhh. I have to decide, like you said, what I’m willing to compromise.

  12. 2008 July 15

Bravo, Tara! From Patton to Plato, you’ve said more than a mouthful. I’m taking this post to heart. You’re an inspiration, my bloggy friend!

[Tara R.] Melissa B… *blushes* thanks so much. Patton – because this is war! Plato, because I want to make nice with my enermy (food). :D

  13. 2008 July 15

BTW, my post today deals with the reality (or lack thereof) of the Carlin quotes I posted yesterday. Thanks for contributing to the discussion–your words are always deeply appreciated!

[Tara R.] Melissa B… always glad to support a sista!

  14. 2008 July 15

ugh…i’m so there with you! i can’t squeeze into any of my pants…hence skirts…yay for skirts!
and starving…it doesn’t work anymore. not.at.all!! it just makes me feel sick not skinny!!
take dance class with me…i’ll sign you up…meet me at 7:45 for jazz. k? ;)
    xoxo

[Tara R.] Melissa… that sounds great! Me dancing? Ah, another way to inflict the greatest amount of embarrassment on my children. I’m so there!

  15. 2008 July 15

Yeah for a touch of realism in this world!

[Tara R.] E’s Mommy… thank you so much for stopping by. You came a long way! I checked out your place, very cool ~ Mozambique ~ very cool!

  16. 2008 July 15

Dessert? Did someone say Dessert?? I think not!! I just got back from swimming a mile. Your post inspired me, Tara! Can’t wait to help you celebrate your Blogaversary tomorrow!

    [Tara R.] Veggie… A mile!? That’s awesome… good job.

  17. 2008 July 15

Oh crap! Now I feel the need to go for a long walk or bike ride. I also have not been getting much exercise lately and the clothes are getting tighter.

I remember when I was young, I was too skinny and couldn’t gain weight. I used to cry over it. Now I wish I could get that metabolism back!

[Tara R.] Bad Momma… I know what you mean. Back in the day I could eat like a pig and nothing. I tried to GAIN weight too. If I just had of that metabolism… :)

  18. 2008 July 15

Everyone stole my comments. They all suck. :P

[Tara R.] Maria… but, you my friend, are extraordinary. :D

  19. 2008 July 15

What a coincidence! I wrote a post on this subject tonight. That is too weird. I’m reading backwards; sorry. I’ll read the other post, but I think this one is terrific. I wish you luck (and strength in your conviction.) :)

[Tara R.] Half-Past… I hear ya sista friend (I read your post). Unfortunately, I’m at an age now that I can’t get away with anyone thinking my muffin top is a baby bulge. Good luck to your too.

  20. 2008 July 15

Ah, very well said and such a great reminder. This is exactly what I needed to read today as I’m feeling defeated by my new exercise regimen….showing little results :(

[Tara R.] Sandy… that is my problem too… instant gratification, instant results. I just have to keep going, trying different things. Good luck with your exercise. I aiming for less bulges for sweater weather.

  21. 2008 July 16

TARa, thanks sweet girl for that last comment. today was better. getting through it. yup, littermates stick together. **tuck tuck** beany

[Tara R.] Beany… if anyone can understand being swamped at work, I can… something great will happen for you soon.

  22. 2008 July 16

    I like the “is”…
It IS within my limits to avoid the candy in my coworkers bottom drawer and instead have some chicken soup.. I get it!

[Tara R.] MP… I have to stop focusing on what I know I can’t do and go forward with what I can. I can get rid of the jar of M&Ms on my desk, I can get rid of the chips in the drawer… see where I’m going with this? I have a lot more stashes than I wanted to admit. :)
