Is that a clutch in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

2008 May 15

Hub’s niece is graduating from high school this week. He and JM left early Thursday morning to drive to Arkansas for the ceremony. WK still has a few weeks left in school and he can’t afford to miss any classes so he’s staying home with me.

I graciously offered to LET them drive my uber-cool, mom-mobile ~ a Honda CRV, recently pimped out with an Aussie-accented GPS. It gets pretty good highway mileage and it’s a comfortable ride ~ roomy. While they’re gone I have a choice of vehicles to get me to and fro. Either Hub’s manly-man F150 or JM’s little Dodge Neon.

As much as I enjoy bearing down on stupid motorists (you know, the ones who don’t know how to use turn signals or stop at intersections) I am taking a pass on the mega truck and opting to travel in the college kid’s little econo-car.

It’s a 5-speed. Need I say more? This isn’t about saving the planet from automobile emissions or scrimping on obscenely priced gasoline. Nope, I LOVE driving a car with manual transmission.

First new carMy first ever NEW car, one I bought with my own money, was a pocket rocket ~ a white Honda CRX. A tiny two-seater that I just had to have ~ saw an ad for it in some magazine. Carried that page around until the creases tore the paper. Being a quasi-sportcar (wanna-be) there was no question that I would get a stick. A car that small with an automatic… no, just no.

It was also about $500 more to get an automatic transmission, and I was all about the Benjamins.

The only problem was that I couldn’t even drive it off the lot. I had to ride home in MY new car while my dad drove it. After about two weeks, I felt confident enough to take the car out on my own. It wasn’t always pretty, or sound right, but I eventually got the hang of driving with two feet. There were times that I had to pull the hand brake and wave people around me when I couldn’t manipulate a hill and I did grind the gears a few times trying to shift, but now I drive like a pro.

I even taught Hubs how to drive a five-speed and when we got JM her car (Sweet 16 birthday present) the driver’s ed fell to me. I may have prolonged giving her the green light to drive on her own for selfish reasons, and always jump at the chance to drive it now.  I really love a 5-speed car.

There is something about the ‘feel’ of the car. The whine of the rpms as they climb, ‘feeling’ for just the right moment to shift. That tingle running up your arms and making your heart beat just a little faster.winding road The hum of the engine vibrating through the soles of you feet and up your legs as you clutch and accelerate… ahhhh… it’s almost orgasmic.

I can understand why NASCAR drivers do what they do… there is just something magical about what you can do with a stick shift. Downshifting to slow the car, letting those rpms rev to the max before upshifting and slingshotting around a line of cars.  Shifting, engaging the clutch, hitting the gas, full-hands-on driving! I. LOVE. IT!

I’ve got the car for only a few days, then will have to give it back to the college kid. If gas weren’t so expensive, I’d be taking a road trip myself, preferrably down a long and winding road.

My first car was a Mazda – stick shift also – Oh, how I miss that little tin can now.

    [Tara R.] Carrie… a stick is where it’s at! :D

I have never owned a stick shift, but I have driven them before. Hills are still my enemy (which is why, after living on a hill for six years) I still haven’t bought one.

[Tara R.] Sue… when I first got the Honda, I live in Knoxville, TN near the UT campus. It’s called The Hill for a reason. I learned early how to ‘pop’ the clutch. Hills, no problem!

I drive a 5-speed Camry, almost an oxymoron because it’s such a “Mom” car. Think I got it cheap (bought it used off the lot, but it was only 8 months old) because it is a stick. Hubby and two chix don’t drive stick, which means my car is all about me. Drove an automatic for years, and it wasn’t the same.

[Tara R.] Melissa B… when we got JM her car, I was afraid I might have forgotten how to drive a stick. Nope, just like riding a bike, came back immediately. There is nothing like a stick!

If I could have afforded the stick option in my blazer, I would totally be there. My favorite car ever was my 92 Honda Accord; it was a sporty little thing, complate with a 5 speed and a sunroof. Ah, those were the days….

[Tara R.] Kori… I miss my little CRX too. I was dangerous in that car. I was young, stupid, and driving a fast car. Those WERE the days! :D

I drive LC’s mustang sometimes when she drinks too much at a bar–I wouldn’t trust myself to drive it alone, but if she’s in the car, I can. I want to really learn though, enough to be on my own. You never know when you may have to drive stick!
    ;)

[Tara R.] Heather… that’s exactly why JM’s first car was a stick. We have a friend who has a heart problem. His wife works and he has a 5-speed Jeep. If his daughter didn’t know how to drive it, if something were to happen to him, she couldn’t get him help. I encourage you to learn how to drive a stick, just in case.

Oh yeah, I love me a manual transmission. I really miss having one. Sadly they don’t make hybrids with a clutch. lol

[Tara R.] CableGirl… I know what you mean. I looked into that with a hybrid too. But, a 5-speed is still more economical than an automatic. It’s a start. ;)

I drive a stick shift as well and I just love it. I swear I was a race car driver in my previous life because I love to drive fast. Of course, now with the kiddies, I drive more like my grandma.

[Tara R.] Whiney… I had to drive to an appointment today, I was a menace, changing lanes, passing slow driver, revving the engine… oohh… I loved it. I wouldn’t drive like that with the kids in the car, but on my own, I’m dangerous. :D

    “stick shift” all the way.

automatic is like driving a golf buggy.

[Tara R.] xbox… seriously, takes ALL the fun out of driving.

My first car was a ‘83 White VW Rabbit Convertible and I wanted it so bad I bought it and it sat in my parents driveway for months before I finally learned to drive it. It was all about having a cute car back then…sigh.

[Tara R.] Mom… cute cars rule! Admit it though, driving a stick is WAY too much fun.

It’s been so long since driving a stick shift I’d almost forgotten the adrenaline rush of switching those gears. I had a few friends with the Honda CRX – fun ride! The other day I had to fill up @ $3.98/gal. Made me a little sick.

[Tara R.] Chuck… I’ve been almost looking for reason to drive somewhere… til I had to fill the college kid’s car with gas. Even her little car was about $40 for a tank. $3.98 is insane!

I’ve heard that about driving a stick..and I actually tried when I was a teen, my friend tried to teach me in the parking lots by my house. I just couldn’t “feel” it and actually had dreams about it..

That was a very cute car, I remember it.

[Tara R.] MP… I learned how to drive mine in a chuch parking lot near my home. I taught JM in the parking lot at our local junior college. You do have to ‘feel’ it. My son will tell me when to shift if he’s riding with me. Most of the time he’s right on. He’s going to be easy to teach.

My first car was a horrible green little escort which was always breaking down. One day I was driving with it and the stick shift came off in my hand! Bye the way, like your Aussie-accented GPS (I’m an Aussie). I have a very posh English woman telling me where to go. Much better than the Homer Simpson voice before that! What did we do before GPS!

[Tara R.] Bronnie… bad luck on the stick shift… I do love an Aussie-accent. Before GPS? I got SOOO lost.

  13. 2008 May 16

I so miss my stick days. Can’t wait till I get out of this friggin’ mini-van and back to the way things are supposed to be!

[Tara R.] Meg… I know what you mean. I’m hoping the college kid is inspired to get going to save enough $$ to buy her own car and I get her little 5-speed back.

  14. 2008 May 16

My hubby is the same way. He’s never owned an automatic.

My 1st boyfriend had that same Honda CRX! I remember that pseudo-backseat, LOL!

[Tara R.] Sandy… so do you get to drive hubby’s car? The CRX was a funny little car, that’s for sure.

I need an aussie accented GPS to whisper to me all throughout the day. that would be fabulous.

[Tara R.] Sassy… the accent could be a little stronger, but it is very nice.

Not going well in Florida? I hate to hear that. I want everything to work out for you. Good luck with everything. I like the office decoration!

[Tara R] Confession… oh, everything is going fine, we got the go ahead on some things so it’s just a lot of work. But we should have some more help at the end of the month…. whoot! *wink, wink*

  17. 2008 May 18

I cannot wait until the kids are older to go back to driving a stck shift.. right now the auto transmission is my only saving grace when I am looking for whatever the kids have thrown on the floor and I have to find it while I am driving..hahaah

[Tara R.] Kim… when Hubs told me he was looking for a 5-speed for the college kid’s first car, I was probably more excited then she was when we gave it to her.

  18. 2008 May 19

    LOL! Very clever.

[Tara R.] Groovy Mom… I had to give the car back on Monday. *sigh*
