The family that tattoos together, stays together

(Update: JM sent me that black button for the post… she is the coolest kid!)

In a couple of weeks my college kid is coming home for the summer. We have big plans. I talked her into coming with me when I get another tattoo. (I just have to find a way to break it to Hubs –  ’Honey, I want to get a second tat… love you!’ – that’s in case he reads this post… Mwah!)

When she turned 18, not a few days after or a couple of weeks, THE. DAY, JM went to get her first tattoo. I say first, because they are addictive. You may say you’ll only get one. You may be successful in putting off the inevitable, but someday, sometime, you will get another one.

I really couldn’t say much when JM said she wanted one since I had gotten mine years before (while Hubs was TDY for about a week) – a tramp stamp I think people call it. It’s a Celtic Love Knot I had inked on my right shoulder. Each element, each color symbolizes something special, someone special in my life.

JM also went to the tattoo parlor knowing what she wanted and where she wanted it. I had hoped to go with her, but she opted to have her best friend there. I guess going to get your first tattoo with your mommy is uncool. In retrospect, she was right. I just wanted to be there… you know, share in yet another milestone in my child’s life. Blah, blah, blah, I’ll have a little cheese with that whine.

Who am I kidding… I just wanted an excuse to get a second tat. I thought I could pull a fast one and Hubs wouldn’t notice if he was aggravated that his little girl got one.

Anyhoo… JM said she would go with me and even take photos if I want to blog about it. I love my kids, they are so… enabling. Here is the pattern I want. The only thing I have to decide now, is the color(s) and placement. Any suggestions?

WOOHOO! More tattoos! I would be covered in them if I hadn’t gotten pregnant LOL. I have two tramp stamps of my own and was going to get a third when I found out I was pregnant over 3 years ago. I still yearn to get more. I would also love to have more piercings, but I think I will stop for now at eleven. :)

[Tara R.] Anna… I get all giddy just thinking about getting another tat… I can’t wait!

  2. 2008 April 21

I want 3 stars on my other foot now. Especially since it is flip flop season!

[Tara R.] Krissy… that sounds cool. I wondered about putting one on my foot, just can’t decide.

  3. 2008 April 21

You should head down to Miami and get on Miami Ink!!

[Tara R.] Nola… I’d rather go to L.A. and have Kat Von D to it! :D

  4. 2008 April 21

I have a toe ring and then my kids and dh’s initials (how eighth grade of me)on my inner ankle. I love them and want another.

    Fab design!

[Tara R.] Atadrade… I think that’s sweet. See, it’s like Ruffles, you can’t have just one.

    Awesome. I want another one.

[Tara R.] Tasina… We should pick a day and everyone go the same time, all over blog-dom.

  7. 2008 April 21

how about a tattoo of beany bear? he he. just teasin!!!

    peace, kathleen :)

[Tara R.] Beany… a teeny, beany bear… that would be funny. I could hide it, like Waldo… now that could be fun. :D

its funny how we build perceptions of people from their blogs that we are certain are the real thing, I NEVER would have pictured you as a tattooee (?)

very subjective things, but I’m still quietly proud of mine, 11 years old now.

I am really not an outwardly tattoo type at all.

[Tara R.] xbox… so does that mean you won’t respect me in the morning? When I first got the tattoo, my son was about 5yo. Most of the time it’s covered by my clothes. One day I was sitting on the floor in a tank-top. The boy comes up behind me, starts pushing on it with his thumb… saying over and over, ‘ hoooochie mamma, hoooochie mamma.’ I was so proud. Lots of people are surprised when they find out I have one. I am the stereotypical Soccer Mom… but I still like to live on the edge – HA! :D

You are much braver than I am. I have always wanted a tattoo, but have always been too indecisive to 1) pick a tattoo and 2) know that I will be happy with it for the rest of my life.

[Tara R.] Anna… that’s probably why I waited so long to get mine too. When I knew exactly what I wanted and I decided one day to go for it. I was 37 when I got this first one. I figured once gravity took over and I got totally wrinkled, it would migrate to my hip eventually…. I can live with that. :D

I love the design! I read your comment to Nola about having Kat Von D doin the tat.. how beautiful is she? Seriously?

When you go to the parlor it will come to you..where you want it.. That is what happened when I took my design .. I could not think of where to put it.. and then as soon as I walked in the door I knew.. “tramp stamp all the way” hahah.

[Tara R.] Kim… Kat, I’d let her do me… the tat, the tat! Yea! for tramp stamps!

  11. 2008 April 22

Yay for tats!! I’m planning the next one. haha I can’t wait to go with you. It’ll be a bonding experience. : ) love ya MOM! mwah

[MOM] JM… I’ll have all the laundry cleared off your bed by next week. We still have to tell Dad we’re going….

  12. 2008 April 22

That is awesome. I sometimes get tat envy. I am so afraid to get one because I KNOW I will become addicted.

[Tara R.] Melinda… I guess if I can keep the nine year gap between tats, I’ll run out of years before I run out of skin.

  13. 2008 April 22

Oooh I like yours! Although I’m a huge wuss….I don’t know if I will ever get a tattoo. I only got my belly button pierced on a whim in college…but I don’t know if I could psych myself up for a tat. I like the heart! Where are you going to put it??

[Tara R.] Ashley… I was worried about the pain too, but it felt more like a sunburn than anything else. I was thinking about putting it on my ribcage, a little off to the side.

  14. 2008 April 22

The tramp stamp is the one located in the center of the lower back. I think for your new pattern blue and black would look nice.

[Tara R.] Lauren… nice! I like the blue and black idea… the heart would fit in the spot. Hmmmm?

  15. 2008 April 22

Oh you are so fun!!! I think if I got a tat I would have to post about it being addiction number 9,294 ;)

[Tara R.] Danielle… I am really getting excited about this. I will definitely show it off once I get it.

  16. 2008 April 22

I love tattoos! I’ve got three and the design for my fourth in the wings… just waiting for the right moment and since it will be on the inside of my wrist it has to be at a time when I don’t plan on doing any strenuous work.

Since your design is Celtic, I’d go with traditional manuscript colors, gold, red, blue or green.

[Tara R.] CableGirl… I was leaning toward the blue and green… sort of fading in and out of the two colors in the corners and overlaps.

  17. 2008 April 22

LOL. My mom actually bought my first tattoo for my 16th birthday. Not only did she pay for it but she was there to step in when the artist forgot for a moment that I was way under age.:)

I think it’s great that you two are going to bond over ink! It’s a sign o’ the times, I tell ya.

[Tara R.] J.S… I took JM to get her belly button pierced when she was 16. We drove all over town trying to find a notary for the age waiver. I can’t imagine doing something like this with my mom. Mani-pedi’s maybe, ink… not!

  18. 2008 April 22

I don’t think anything can surprise me about you anymore! I think the only thing that would shock me is if you didn’t follow your heart on somthing…which is also why your hubby will get over it. Me? I’m way too adverse to pain to pay someone to inflict it on me. I don’t even have my ears pierced! Therefore, I don’t feel qualified to give you color suggestions. You’ll know.

[Tara R.] April…. I am ‘a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma….’ Getting the tat didn’t hurt. It just itched like crazy while it was healing.

  19. 2008 April 22

I like your design. I am a tatoo virgin, so have no idea what colors look good.

[Tara R.] Heather… I think you need to take the plunge and go under the needle. :D

  20. 2008 April 22

Needle weenie that I am, I have no tatoos. I do have my ears pierced…once. Sheesh. I’m so boring! I love that your tatoos have symbolic meaning.

[Tara R.] Angela… I’d tell you what it means, but then I’d have to kill ya! National Security and all that… :D

  21. 2008 April 22

So cool. You’re an awesome mom. Too bad you couldn’t sneak one in, too!

I’m confused though- is your first one on your lower back or on your shoulder? Did I read right? It said tramp stamp- or were you saying that’s where JM got hers?

    Love the new design!

As for placement, I don’t know- depends on how visible you want it..

[Tara R.] Nissa… you didn’t read it wrong, I was just unschooled on ‘tramp stamp’ traditional locations. The first one is on my shoulder, JM’s is on her hip, and I can’t decide where to put my second one, but all that is important is that I know where it is… doesn’t have to be open to the public.

  22. 2008 April 22

I have a yellow swallow tail butterfly, in the place that i have heard referred to as a%% antlers…hmmm…

Anyway…I am planning a second one soon…a rune design and was thinking of having it colored like a forget-me-not—starting out blue around the outside then thin white faded into yellow.

Yours is very nicely done to have held the color so well.

[Tara R.] Winey… hmm, swallowtail, a%% antlers… coincidence, I think not! :D The second design sounds great! I may have the inker re-touch my first one, I haven’t decided yet.

  23. 2008 April 22

Blue and green sounds pretty to me. Or blue and purple.
I’m currently designing my 3rd tattoo.

[Tara R.] Cyndy… I think either of those combinations would be good. What are your tats?

  24. 2008 April 22

I would go with flesh tone colors (matching your skin) and place on your back near the buttocks. I would also get the outline done in a flesh tone color. Oh, and also I would just not let them press hard or just have them fake making a noise and not do it at all. Hmm, what I am saying is ouch Tara! Its cool that you and your daughter are tight like that though. You are super cool, way cooler than me. I have no insight to offer because I am afraid of the process and blacked out twice thinking of you doing it. ;)

[Tara R.] Joeprah… granted, tats aren’t like someone giving you a ‘zerbert,’ but they don’t hurt nearly as bad as everyone thinks they do. Cool maybe, crazy – definitely! :D

Hey cuz, you need a lion tat…

    Dak-Tari….

[Tara R.] Cuz… funny you should say that. I have a drawing of a lion that Butch drew ‘back in the day’ that I was considering having turned into a tat. – cue spooky music -

  26. 2008 April 22

“they are so… enabling.” LOL :)

I like the design. I’ve heard tattoos can be addicting too. I think I’m too much of a wuss. Permanence scares me, much like marriage.

I think earth tones would be nice.

    [Tara R.] Sandy… permanence… that’s why I won’t have anyone’s name inked on me, even my own.

  27. 2008 April 23

You’re so cool! I love the mother/daughter getting tattooed together! And you are so right about tattoos being addictive! I have 3 and want more!

[Tara R.] Stacey… there some things JM wanted all to herself… belly button piercing, cartiledge piercing… but tattoos, she’s cool with us both having that. Just not matching …. too weird. :D

  28. 2008 April 23

oh, honey, you may be a badass, but someone misinformed you! actually, i think it’s just a societal thing – trying to make women with tattoos appear to be less classy or whatnot.

originally, a tramp stamp was meant to be a tattoo right above the area I like to call the “upper ass-al area” – basically anything from waist to crack.

you? you’re just all earthy and irish and stuff, not a tramp.

notice i waited until the end to mention that i have three different tramp stamps? :P

[Tara R.] Zoeyj… I’m not even a bad=ass wanna-be, more like a bad-ass not even close. Yeah, I got the t.s. thing totally wrong. But, I still think tattoos are sexy, even on old soccer moms like me. Three… you have to share! :D
