They really say that?

2008 April 13

My peeps and I are a curious lot. We tend to be a rather geekish clan. Hubs and I read voraciously and watch History and Discovery channels for fun. JM has been an honor student since second grade and continues her academic dominance at college. WK, the introspective silent one among us, is another Einstein just waiting to win his first Nobel Prize – in skateboard park design.

In contrast to this, we sometimes speak to each other in odd movie quotes. Taken out of context, they often make no sense whatsoever, but we manage to include them seamlessly into everyday conversations. I would also like to imagine that we are not alone in this practice.

Some of our more frequently used quotes:

I shall alert the media‘ – said by Hobson (John Gielgud) to Arthur (Dudley Moore) when Arthur announces he is going to take a bath. [Arthur - 1981]

Thank you sir! May I have another!‘ – said by Chip (Kevin Bacon) while being paddled during the hazing scene. [Animal House - 1978]

Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries!‘ – taunt by the French knight (John Cleese) to King Arthur (Graham Chapman). [Monty Python and the Holy Grail - 1975]

Chicks dig me, because I rarely wear underwear and when I do it’s usually something unusual‘ – John Winger (Bill Murray ) to Sergeant Hulka (Warren Oates) as the new recruits introduced themselves. [Stripes - 1981]

That just happened‘ – Ricky Bobby (Will Ferrell) to Cal Naughton (John C. Reilly) [Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - 2006]

You’ll notice that these don’t include any highbrow, artsy-fartsy indie films. No! We prefer bourgeois, laugh-your-ass-off, no-redeeming-social-value cinema.

Out of curiosity, and to alleviate my concern that my family is unfit for normal society, do you throw out movie lines on a regular basis, and if you do, who do you quote?

    We do that too!
We use ‘I’mma be all over you like a spider monkey’ from Talledega Nights, as well as ‘Shake & Bake’.

Also, ‘Hello lover’ is something I say to everyone from SATC, which will be a movie next month, and it’s in the film, so it counts!

There’s a crap load more, but I’m blanked out now.

[Tara R.] Maria… great quote movie! WK keeps yelling ‘I’m all jacked up on Mountain Dew’, don’t know why that one’s so funny to me, but every time it slays me. I say the spider monkey quote too. Whew, I feel better now. :D

  2. 2008 April 13

We do that some, too. Love your choice of quotes! Of course, I’m blanked right now as to the quotes we do use…

[Tara R.] Ashley… as your kids get older and you start watching movies with them, you’ll pick up lots. ;)

  3. 2008 April 13

Yeah, you right! (NOLA phrase). Arthur gets top billing :) :) :)

Can I come live in your house?!

[Tara R.] Nola… I use that phrase all the time! I really need for my kids to watch that movie with me.

  4. 2008 April 13

One thing that led to me marrying my husband was that his favorite movie quote was, “Keep your filthy hands off me you damned dirty apes!!!” We’re quote happy too.

[Tara R.] Tasina… OMG, that’s hilarious! I can understand why that would be such a chick magnet pick-up line. Whoot!

  5. 2008 April 13

Hey there! Thanks so much for the welcome to The Buzz! As for family quotes, my “family of origin” is LOADED with them (see my blog title for one of them!) Here with my husband and kids, we also have several, but my favorite comment for bantering is “Your Mom….,” as in, “I have a ton of homework tonight.” and the response, “Your mom has a ton of homework tonight…” I’m not exactly capturing the tone here, but trust me, it’s funny, especially when it comes out of the blue. My husband likes to say “220-221, whatever it takes.”

This is a sweet post; quotes like these bond families in a simple way.

[Tara R.] Half-Past… we love ‘your mom…’ jokes, and yes, they are hilarious! I love these because they are like our own private, insider jokes. Thanks for stopping by.

  6. 2008 April 13

Yep, we love quotes, too! Although, as my musical theatre fanaticism is out there now, I can also admit that we break out in song a lot, too. One quote that I love using from The Princess Bride is “Have fun storming the castle!”

[Tara R.] April… or ‘I don’t think that means what you think it means…’ PB is one of my family’s all time favorite movies.

  7. 2008 April 13

LOL. We sooooo do this too!

Lots of Monty Python, Princess Bride, a bit of Dazed & Confused and lots of Tombstone.

Tombstone is definitely one of the best quoting movies ever!

[Tara R.] Judith S…. I lurve me some Monty Python! The hubs and I used to watch old episodes of the Flying Circus. Princess Bride – best movie, evah!

  8. 2008 April 13

The Girls and I have the “Seriously” conversation A LOT. (from Grey’s Anatomy)
    Seriously?
    Seriously.
    Seriously!

These are staples in my personal rotation:

“Bueller? Bueller?” from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

“These are broken. Mine are broken.” Pretty Woman.

“I’m not dead yet. I want to go for a walk.” Monty Python…can’t remember which one.

“What am I? The designated homeless?” from BadBoys.

“Luuuuuuuuucy! You’ve got some ’splainin’ to do!” from I Love Lucy.

“People need a passport to come down here. ” from Sweet Home Alabama

[Tara R.] Ms. H… I knew there was a reason I liked you! I’m dating myself here, but Bueller came out the same year Hubs and I got married. One of our favs ever since… now our kids quote from it.

  9. 2008 April 13

I don’t think my husband and I have had one conversation in 12 years together that did not include at LEAST one Raising Arizona line.

The Holy Grail also rears it’s ugly head in our daily chats. Hmmm, what else? Dude, Where’s My Car and Dumb and Dumber a lot. Oh, I could do this all day.

    THAT JUST HAPPENED.

[Tara R.] Mr. Lady… Holy Grail is always good for a few… my girl quotes ‘Mean Girls’ alot… ‘I’ve got a big LESSSSIBAN crush on you!’ :D

  10. 2008 April 13

Believe it or not, we love to quote Mean Girls – me and the hubby…

    “She’s fabulous but she’s evil.”

“Good morning, Mr. Breakfast.” (Pee Wee’s Big Adventure)

    “I like money, though.” (Idiocracy)

Hubby cannot watch Caddyshack without quoting the hell out of it for days and days. If we watch it, he is forbidden to repeat the Bill Murray gopher scene. If he does he fixates and won’t stop for a week.

My brother lives and breathes movie quotes. One conversation with him and we will have one movie quote (at least) per topic. Too many to name here.

[Tara R.] SWC… Bill Murray is a movie genius! I didn’t think I would enjoy ‘Mean Girls’ but it was freakin’ hilarious. Great quotes!

  11. 2008 April 13

    HA HA HA.
I don’t know about my family, but I tend to quote a lot of Grey’s Anatomy, Old School, Anchorman & Mean Girls with my best friends.

And at my dad’s house we quote a lot of Austin Powers, Talledega Nights, Anchorman, Monty Python (I’ve never seen it though!), and a lot others.

    :D

[Tara R.] Heather… Anchorman is big in our house too …’you know I don’t speak Spanish!’ Yes! to Austin Powers too. You have to see Monty Python… you will love it!

  12. 2008 April 13

In another life (and maybe even another time zone), we would totally be couple friends because we do the same thing. A big fav in our house is “No one expects the Spanish Inquisition” or some variation…

[Tara R.] GHD… we would so totally be friends!

  13. 2008 April 13

    hi TARa!

i have been doing this for years girl! i love it when you can do this with someone else who enjoys this as much. one time during our extended family trip this past summer by the campfire with about 12 relatives, me and my awesome teen neice started quoting on cue perfectly from “shrek” about “do you know the muffin man? … why yes, i do …. and we kept going on and on. and we hadn’t practiced it and the other relatives were looking at us like we were crazy and the neice and i were totally having a blast all serious like then giggling. a perfect moment. i think that john cusack movie “say anything” from the 80s has awesome lines to quote and i have been for years.

see, i knew you and i clicked for a good reason! thanks for the cute TARa note today! great to see you again after i finally got email connection again. glad to be back from my trip outa town. was sweet to see your notes when i got connected again.

great night. **tucking you in** beany bear :)

[Tara R.] Beany… there are whole passages of Monty Python that we can go through… sometimes we get going for a long time too. Too funny. Glad you’re back, I’ve missed your notes too.

    ~Amanda~ permalink

Oh, we do this ALL the time around here…and I’ve done it for years with my BFF! Some of my favorites…

“Look me in my eyeball” (as spoken by that weird guy on the beach whose name escapes me in that movie with Ben Stiller and Jennifer Anisten that also escapes me)

“I love the smell of her dirty panties.” (Threesome)

“I’m glad you’re my only daddy…daddy.” (Very Brady Sequel)

    “MerMAN” (Zoolander)

“It was just a really pretty meadow.” (Also Threesome)

“Run Forrest!!!” (Forrest Gump, duh. We say this all the time to the kids when they’re running as fast as they can but looking like a bunch of gimpy kids)

There are so many more…I may have to steal this idea for my very own blog ;)

[Tara R] Amanda… Zoolander… too funny! My kids quote that one a lot… steal away… this has been fun!

  15. 2008 April 13

You know that movie “The Rock” with Nick Cage and Ed Harris?? Well, I was completely enamored with that movie when it came out…(I have a thing for Ed Harris) and for MONTHS spoke almost exclusively in quotes from that movie. True story.

[Tara R.] Nikki… Ed Harris? Oooo, I like that! He’s great. The film ‘The Truman Show’ was shot very close to where I work… Seaside, FL … his character in that movie wasn’t all that nice though. ;)

  16. 2008 April 13

When Hannah FINALLY started walking, then running, we yelled, “Run Forrest Run!” and still do. I see Amanda beat me to that.

Also, “If I wanted to kill you, I’d use my hands.” (Fried Green Tomatoes)

I’m so glad you identified “Thank you sir, may I have another.” We say that, but I couldn’t remember why!

My aunt quotes Monty Python so much that I swore to myself I would watch it before I see her again.

[Tara R.] Angela… you’re welcome on the Animal House quote. From FGT I also like ‘I’m older and I have more insurance’ – I really like yours too. Monty Python rawks!

  17. 2008 April 13

Those are hilarious :) Hubby is a huge Monty Python fan, and those out quotes and references all. the. time!

[Tara R.] Sandy… I do love a good Monty Python quote… they are so useful in a million different situation. ;)

  18. 2008 April 13

    Oh my GAWD.

    That JUST happened.

I say that. I say that everyday, sometimes ten times a day. I love you even more.

    [Tara R.] Huckdoll… I’m blushing now…

  19. 2008 April 14

wait, i still have one arm! come back here and fight! hahahahah. there are so many weird odd ball fun monty python quotes.

i love you even more now, too. i am so with huckster on that one! you rock even more girl.

hey, so sweet, loved your adorable note back to me. you are a dear. sleep tight, beany :)

[Tara R.] Beany… there were too many MP quotes to add here… the scene with the Black Knight alone is priceless.

  20. 2008 April 14

Oh, yes, I use quotes, too. A couple that come to mind immediately are:

“I’m older and I have more insurance.” from Fried Green Tomatoes
“I feel the need, the need for speed.” from Top Gun
“Fiddle dee dee!” from Gone With the Wind

[Tara R.] Songbird… I love the FGT quote and have actually used it before.

  21. 2008 April 14

I do that all the time, in fact I use the exact same quote from Monty Python. I often quote “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls”
sometimes I quote these movies when it doesn’t even make sense but I think its funny, I’m odd like that.

[Tara R.] Allie… that’s the best way to quote movies… totally random! Keep’s people guessing. :D

  22. 2008 April 14

    You are so not alone!

Some of my favorite ‘everyday’ conversation quotes include

“Chug a lug, Donna!’ (From Twin Peaks- Fire Walk with me)

“Y’all live like pigs!’ (From Urban Cowboys)

“Be a lot cooler if ya did..” (From Dazed & Confused. Matthew McConaghey is yum)

“Good Talk, son” (From National Lampoon’s Vacation)

I heart movie quotes. We all use them all the time!

[Tara R] Nissa… I heart you! Great quotes… makes me want to have a movie night to add to my repertoire.

  23. 2008 April 14

We do the same thing. Our favorites come from Monty Python, Star Wars, Forrest Gump, and Knocked Up.

[Tara R.] Groovy Mom… I think Monty Python should be added to the curriculum of every public school in America and Canada. We’ve been watching the Star Wars movies, one after the other, for the last couple of weeks. Good stuff there too!

  24. 2008 April 15

Oh Tara I could write a book on movie quotes:
Have fun storming the castle from Princess Bride
There is always time for a movie montage- The Sweetest Thing
Work it, work it..own it.- pretty woman

I could literally list a 1,000 more!! LOL

    Loved this post!!

[Tara R.] Kim… glad you enjoyed it… I thought of a million more after I hit ’save.’ Lots of Princess Bride quotes, Adam Sandler movies, Ben Stiller’s too.

  25. 2008 April 15

“Dude. Where’s my car?” From the same movie, “And then? and then?”

Titanic: “She is made out of iron; I assure you, she will sink.” We use this one instead of saying out loud, “Are you freaking stupid?”

“I have an innate sense of direction.” Emperor’s New Groove. Usually to reassure the 8 year old that we are not, in fact, lost. But good for a laugh, too.

There are a billion more, but I think I must be the only person in the world who hasn’t seen Momty Python-and don’t care to. : )

[Tara R.] Kori… I like that ‘Titanic’ quote, I may have to steal that one. I say the ’sense of direction’ one a lot… didn’t even know I was quoting a movie. :D I forgive you the Monty Python faux pas.

  26. 2008 April 15

My brother and I speak nearly exclusively in movie quotations… mostly 80s movies. Part of the reason CableDad and I got along so well when we met was that he understood some of my more obscure references and was able to quip back with the follow up line. :D

[Tara R.] CableGirl… you’ve gotta love a guy that speaks your language.
