Dream date and deja vu

When is a coincident just that… a chance happenstance with no hidden meaning, and when is it the coming together of events in a fated occurance? NOLA Notes raised that question in her post “Do you believe in coincidence?” She asks if we do believe our life events happen for a reason, what convinced us there was some ‘deeper meaning.’

I do believe in that ‘deeper meaning,’ we just don’t always know what that meaning is until later. For me, a curious dream and a lunch date years later came together one spring afternoon sealing my fate with a man who would become my husband…

After high school I attended a Junior College in town and worked at a local seafood restaurant. The crew at the restaurant, all young college students, became fast friends and we would often hang out together after work and on weekends.

After one particularly fun Saturday swimming and partying at the lake, I went home that night and slept the sleep of the dead. During the night I had a very odd dream. Usually my dreams are very much like my waking life. There are colors, sounds, landscapes, smells, sensations… everything.

This night, this dream had none of that. There was no sound and no background of any kind, only blackness and a single focused halo of light shining on two men. One was tall and dark, athletic and undeniably handsome. The other shorter and blond, more stocky with ‘boy-next-door’ looks.

The taller of the two was carrying an aluminum bat and was dressed to play baseball. The other was wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and was standing beside a bike. It was obvious the two knew each other and were carrying on a friendly conversation even though I couldn’t hear them speak.

A detached VOICE told me, ‘this one is for you,’ and I knew IT meant the blond man.

‘No,’ I said, but it was more a thought than a spoken response, ‘the other one.’

“No, he is not for you. This one.’

The dream ended. I woke in the morning remembering the scene in it’s entirety.

Fast forward two years, and the dream forgotten.

I had since transferred to the University of Tennessee and it was near the end of Spring Quarter. The future Hubs and I had been together for almost two years and had gotten engaged the previous August. Our plans were to marry that June.

Hubs and I were meeting for lunch at the Quad and I had gone into the bookstore for a cold drink while I waited. When I came outside I saw Hubs and his roommate talking.

RM was tall and dangerously handsome. He was also the biggest jerk I had ever met and treated his girlfriends like chattel. Coming from the ball fields having finished intramural softball practice, he was heading to his room for a shower. He had his bat slung over his shoulder.

Hubs, dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, was coming from class and had ridden up on his bike.

See where I’m going with this? I stood on the walk just staring at them unable to even say hello. The dream slammed into my brain bringing back all the VOICE had told me and all I had seen. I stood there so long just looking at them, they asked me what was wrong. I couldn’t explain it to them.

Coincidence? Was the chance meeting of roommates just close enough to a snippet of memory that I filled in the blanks from a long discarded dream, or was I truly introduced to my future husband months before I actually met him.

    Hey, um, what’s chattel?

    It’s distracting me.

See how loopy I get when I run across a word I don’t know? Geez, I’m such a word slut! *lol*

I don’t believe in coincidences. I don’t believe everything happens for a reason. I don’t have any reasoning behind it, I’m just cynical that way. :)

wow!! that’s crazy!! i am a firm believer that everything happens for a reason and that people come into your life for a reason…no matter how long a stay in your life…or how short…there is a reason! i would say, a purpose but, that sounds so yucky…
    anyway…have a great day!!
how are things going with you?
    xoxo

That’s something! To dream about someone you don’t know yet. That’s definitely something to think about. That’s so awesome! I wish I’d had such a dream!!! Thanks for sharing.

No such thing as coincidence!! Everything happens for a reason, though we are usually only vaguely aware what that reason is.

I am too a believer that everything happens for a reason. Your dream, when it came true must have given you the chills huh? That is something.. wow.

I don’t have any hard set answers for this sort of thing. However, I do believe the more we are connected to ourselves, the more chances we have for feeling truly fulfilled.

Great one! I definitely believe there’s a reason things happen, and that there’s a bigger purpose. It’s been amazing how many things can go wrong, but when the “right’ thing comes along, life seems to fall in place around it.

I most definitely believe in coincidences! I had several dreams where they ended up sort of happening. So weird!

Great story, Tara! I do believe things happen for a reason, and that we do have some sort of intuition that comes out in our dreams..

After suffering the loss of a baby, my belief that things happen for a reason is what got me through that horrible time. Why would you seeing your Hubster (my ‘lil’ bro) in a dream be any different? Nice story! ((And, for the record, I’ve always known ya’ll were meant to be.)

  12. 2008 March 7

What an incredibly story! I’m one that hopes that things happen for a reason.

Fate is what you make it…

But sometimes it gives you a good nudge in the right direction- such as sending you fantastically prophetic dreams.

Awesome post, honey! (And sorry about the recent absenteeism, I’ll be better from now on, I swear!)

Weird!! I love hearing things like that because I totally believe in everything. Fate, coincidence, everything happens for a reason, it was meant to be, I interpret dreams, I believe in ghost, etc.

But this story just knocked my socks off! Thanks for sharing :)

This is the most amazing post that I have read in a long time. I believe you were sent a message straight from the heart of the universe. Oh, I love it. You are soulmates!!!!

  16. 2008 March 7

that is eerie, in a nice way, but deja vus are sort of spooky aren’t they?
Neat story thoough, you are obviously meant to be together!

That is such an awesome story! I wish my story with my hubby was as fated sounding. I’m afraid, though, that it’s wholly unimpressive, haha.

    Just a blog-hoppin!
