Celebrity endorsement du jour

2008 February 5

I think it’s just my week to rant. Today is Tsunami Tuesday, Super Tuesday, Over-the-top Jumbo-sized Tuesday and celebrities are coming out of the woodwork to endorse this or that candidate. Who cares?

I am only marginally impressed when other politicians put their stamp of approval on a candidate, but I couldn’t care less if an actor, television personality, or musician does it.

Regardless of which party candidate I favor, I am not going to be swayed by who they have standing with them on the podium. If anything, I will question their judgment and look at them with a more discerning eye.

Mike Huckabee has had Chuck Norris by his side for most of his campaign… why would he think that lends him any added political credence? What does Norris know, that the rest of us don’t, about Huck’s ability to run this country? And why should we care what Norris thinks?

Barak Obama has the backing of the most-high diva Oprah. Again, why should this in any way have an influence on the general public?

Other A-listers who have come out in support of Obama include George Clooney, Edward Norton, Will Smith, Robert DeNiro and Rob Reiner. So what?

He also received endorsements from Caroline Kennedy, Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger and Sen. Ted Kennedy. I know it’s the cynic in me, but these endorsements feel more like indictments AGAINST Hillary Clinton, than they seem like SUPPORT for Obama. Could it be that Hill or Bill pissed Ted off somehow and this is how he retaliates?

Same as Rudy Guiliani putting his support behind John McCain – does he really think McCain is the better candidate, or does he simply want Huck and Romney to lose the nomination? Who knows?Who cares?

Bad-boy Sean Penn’s support for Dennis Kucinich apparently didn’t help.

White House groupie Barbara Streisand has jumped on Clinton’s bandwagon, as has rapper 50 cent. Wow… now there are a couple of people whose political prowess I admire. Please!

Political powerhouse Harry Belafonte has John Edwards’ back, as does Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Brown (who?).

Seems the best Romney could do is laugh it up with late night talker Jay Leno.

It’s all pointless.

Ugh….I am so over all the election stuff this time around. In all honesty, there is not a single candidate that I can say is stellar…

Great post, and your last sentence sums it up rather nicely.

I couldn’t agree with you more!

Our society in general puts way too much importance on what the hollywood crowd thinks and does.

They are not normal Americans!!!!! Doesn’t anyone else get that?

Somehow, I think it must sway someone, or they wouldn’t make such a big deal about these celebrity endorsements. Maybe some 18 year old turned on the tv and said “Wow! Chuck Norris likes Huckabee- I’m gonna vote for him too, cuz Chuck kicks butt!”

    Or not.

Shouldn’t Maria Schriver be voting republican? hmmm.. :)

i think nissa is right. there are so many celebrity mongers that jump on their faves bandwagon…take oprah, for example. if oprah says obama is THE ONE…then…he must be THE ONE because oprah says so. WHATEVER!!
i have my personal favorite. maybe i should start a campaign endorsing him/her…i’m sure that would pull some heavy weight, whaddya think?!

Dennis K had mine, as well. I’m shocked that did not boost his chances. I mean, come on. I could kick Oprah’s ass in coolness any day.
    Peace out!

Thanks for the political update ;) Anything that has Oprah attached to it is a ‘no go’ for me…be it man or book ;)

    Yup. Pointless.

But guess who has been reading up on the politicans? Yup. Me. Getting ready to vote.

Truly. I can’t wait until November so we can move on as a country…one way or another.

I know. I certainly could care less who singers and actors endorse. I mean who do they think they are, political advisors? I may like you for your music or acting but I am not going to pick my candidate because of who you like!

    hi tara,
amen sister. i could have written this, too! i don’t see why celebs think anybody cares who they back. i love seeing my favorite actors and singers act and sing. i do not care what they think about anything else.

    great points tara,
    nighty night,
    beany

I totally agree. I don’t care what celebs think about politics. It is crazy how much people care what they think.
